International Students Celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year

On Friday, Feb 20th, 2015 after school, our international students had a party to celebrate Chinese Lunar New Year, also called the Spring Festival. It is the most important festival in China and many other Asian countries.

That day was also the Y5-Y10 Sports Carnival Day. It was great to see our International Students travel back from the carnival for the party still in high spirits. They formed different teams to prepare party food. I could tell cooking was an enjoyable activity for most of the students. With their aprons on, they worked enthusiastically as a team, like contestants working in the Master Chef kitchen. After eating the food, we shared some holiday stories and played some games. According to the Chinese Zodiac, 2015 is the year of SHEEP. The Sheep symbolises “peacefulness, humbleness, friendliness and gentleness”. After watching them have fun together, you would believe the spirit of sheep was already embedded into their souls.

The most exciting moment for them was when they were given New Year Red Packets (Lucky Money). Adults giving children red packets is one of the traditions at the new year. In the past, it was believed the lucky money would suppress the evil from the children. Nowadays, the developed meaning of this tradition is to bring children good luck-health, happiness and success. That is my hope for all our international students in 2015.
